Purpose of the Crown Chakra

The crown chakra is all about consciousness and our connection to ourselves, others, and the universe. It helps us think clearly, be aware, and gain wisdom. This chakra starts to develop in early adulthood when our brains are finishing up their growth. If this chakra is out of balance, you might struggle with learning new things or feel disconnected from your spiritual side.

Crown Chakra: Foundation of Life
The crown chakra represents the right to know and to learn.

 Connection to the Physical Body
The crown chakra is linked to the central nervous system, muscular system, and skin.

Connection to the Emotional/Mental Body
The crown chakra is our link to the energy that manifests inspirational and prophetic thought, devotion, and transcendent ideas.

Connection to the Spiritual Body
The energy of the crown chakra connects us to the universe and everything around us. It’s our personal link to the bigger picture and the world beyond ourselves.

Interpreting the Energy of the Crown Chakra

When the crown chakra’s energy is out of balance, it can develop either an excessive or deficient coping strategy for survival.

Excessive Crown Chakra

Too much energy stays in the body, making it overactive, dense, and stagnant. Signs of excess imbalance include:

  • Over-intellectualization
  • Spiritual addiction
  • Confusion
  • Disconnected from body

Deficient Crown Chakra

Too much energy leaves the body, leaving it passive, empty, and feeling useless. Signs of deficient imbalance include:

  • Spiritual cynicism
  • Learning difficulties
  • Rigid Belief Systems
  • Apathy
  • Excess in lower chakras

 Balanced Crown Chakra

A balanced crown chakra means:

  • Ability to perceive, analyze, and assimilate information
  • Intelligent, thoughtful, aware
  • Open-minded, able to question
  • Spiritually connected
  • Wisdom and mastery, broad understanding

Complications of the Crown Chakra

The crown chakra can face several complications affecting transcendence, belief systems, struggles with a “higher power”, union, divinity, and vision.

Possible Causes of Complications

Complications can arise from experiences like important information being withheld from you, education that thwarted curiosity, forced religiosity, spiritual abuse, invalidation of beliefs, not being given the right to question or think for yourself, misinformation, and lies.

Physical Manifestations of Imbalance

When the crown chakra is imbalanced, it can show up in physical issues such as:

  • Coma
  • Migraines
  • Brain tumors
  • Cognitive delusions
  • Nervous conditions
  • Sleep disorders
  • Mental confusion

"Within the boundless expanse of my crown chakra, I merge with the divine, finding unity in the infinite cosmos. Balanced and aligned, I am a vessel of pure consciousness, radiating divine light and embodying the harmony of the universe."

Healing the Crown Chakra

Therapeutic Color: Violet      Associated Element: Thought

Every trauma held in the body affects your whole system–physically, mentally, and emotionally. For example, breaking a leg not only impacts you physically but also influences your thoughts and emotions. When trauma happens it can create a gap between your mind and body and cause issues with how your system communicates with itself, keeping you from healing. When healing, it’s crucial to address trauma comprehensively and work towards reestablishing a connection between what you are thinking and what you are feeling in your body and allow it to be expressed emotionally.

The following suggestions can help to balance the energy of the crown chakra. It is important to note, that healing requires careful attention and patience, especially when dealing with long-held traumas. It may be uncomfortable as you confront past experiences, but this is a natural part of the healing process.

For the best results, combine several methods that you find enjoyable and practice them regularly. Healing takes time and persistence, so be patient with yourself throughout the journey.

1. Meditate
Meditation is all about calming your mind and focusing your thoughts. It’s very helpful for balancing the crown chakra, as it helps you build focus, awareness, and emotional stability.

You can try different types of meditation, like visualization or repeating mantras, to find the one that works best for you. A simple way to start is to find a comfortable position, either sitting or lying down. Close your eyes and count your breaths—inhale for 1, exhale for 2, and keep counting up to 10, then start over at 1. If your mind starts to wander, gently bring your focus back to counting your breaths.

2. Yoga poses
Yoga focused on drawing inward and upward can help to balance the energy of the crown chakra. Some helpful poses include corpse pose,  headstands/shoulder standslotus poserabbit stand, and tree pose.

3. Spiritual discipline
Just like your mind needs learning and your body needs exercise to stay healthy, your spirit needs a regular practice to stay strong and balanced. Spirituality is a part of everyone, and it’s not the same as religion. You can have a spiritual practice even if you’re not into any particular religion.

Spiritual practice is unique to each person, like workout routines. It could be anything from meditation and prayer to spending time in nature or reading spiritual books. Find something that resonates with you and make it a daily habit. The key is to enjoy the practice for its own sake and see it as a way to celebrate the Universe, not just a task to check off.

4. Practice focusing on your connection with the universe
When your crown chakra is out of balance, you might feel disconnected from the world around you, like it’s you against everyone else. This feeling of separation can make you cynical and distant. But in reality, we are all connected—each of our actions affects the world around us.

To start strengthening your feeling of connection, focus on what you have in common with the things and people around you. For example, when you see a drop of dew on the grass, remember that you’re both made of water. Or, think about how everyone shares similar needs for love, self-expression, and being understood. By seeing these connections, you can begin to feel more in tune with the world and less like you’re fighting against it.

5. Examine limiting belief systems
Your spirit has endless potential, but limiting beliefs like “I can’t do it” or “It’s impossible” can block that potential. When you believe that you can’t do something, it becomes harder to reach for your goals. But remember, anything is possible once you start believing it yourself.

To overcome these limiting beliefs, try to find out where they come from. Did they come from your parents, friends, or society? Ask yourself if these beliefs are based on your own experiences or if they were just handed to you by others. If your experiences suggest otherwise, think about what beliefs might fit better with your true potential. By understanding and letting go of these limiting beliefs, you can connect with your limitless potential and achieve more than you thought possible.

6. Practice open-mindedness
When your crown chakra is blocked, it can make it hard to accept ideas or experiences that are different from your own. This might lead to feelings of judgment and bias, making you feel disconnected from the world. Remember, everyone you meet knows something you don’t and has had experiences that you can learn from.

To open up your crown chakra and grow your wisdom, try to listen and ask questions when someone has a different viewpoint. Instead of jumping in with your own opinion, focus on understanding their perspective. If you feel uncomfortable, ask yourself why. This will help you become better at accepting and learning from new ideas, even if they’re different from what you’re used to.

7. Learning & study
The crown chakra is all about thought and understanding. When it’s out of balance, you might struggle to grasp new information, stay open-minded, or ask good questions. To boost this chakra, try exploring new ideas. Reading books, watching videos, or listening to podcasts on self-improvement and different beliefs can help clear blockages and open your mind. If something makes you uncomfortable, take a moment to ask yourself why.

8. Reestablish physical/mental connection (excess)
When the crown chakra is out of balance, it can make you feel disconnected from your body, almost like you’re living in a fantasy rather than facing reality. This often happens because dealing with reality feels too vulnerable or overwhelming, so you might escape into a mental fantasy to avoid those feelings. But staying disconnected from yourself isn’t healthy or safe.

To reconnect with your body and reality, try giving a voice to what you feel. Find a quiet place to sit and focus inward. Notice the sensations in your body and speak about them without judgment. Instead of saying, “I feel tightness in my neck,” try, “I am sensing something inside my neck that feels tight.” Or, instead of “I am angry at what they did,” try, “I am sensing something inside of me that feels angry about what they did.” This helps you see your feelings as messages rather than parts of your identity, making them easier to manage.

9. Allow yourself to experience calmness/relaxation
The crown chakra thrives on quiet and stillness. To keep it healthy, make sure you take moments throughout the day to just be still and calm. Instead of stressing about tasks, turn your focus inward. Take time to relax, and let your mind, body, and spirit unwind. This helps you stay connected to yourself and keeps your crown chakra balanced.

Chakra Therapies

Affirmations are powerful tools for changing how you think about yourself. They help replace negative self-talk with positive statements that support healing.

  • I honor the divinity that resides within me
  • I am on the right path for my life purpose
  • I am open to new ideas
  • I am connected
  • I listen to the universe

Aromatherapy uses certain scents to create a focused connection with different parts of the body through the sense of smell.

Some scents that work great for the crown chakra include Frankincense, Helichrysum, Lavender, and Rosewood.

Color therapy uses the different wavelengths of light found in color to establish a connection to specific areas of the body.

The color violet vibrates at the same range of frequency as the crown chakra. Because of this wearing the color violet or bringing it into your surroundings can help balance the energy of the crown chakra.

Food is the most powerful medicine. It can affect different parts of the body in specific ways.

The energy of the crown chakra is connected to the more spiritual parts of our bodies which means that fasting and detoxing are helpful when working to balance its energy. Herbal teas (e.g., gotu kola, holy basil, lavender, sage) can benefit this chakra as well.

Music therapy can be beneficial for a wide range of physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs. It can help with emotional processing and expression, reduce stress, alleviate anxiety and depression, promote relaxation, manage pain, and support overall well-being.

Music therapy can be used in various ways. You can try listening to specific songs work through feelings like anger or to transition to a different emotional state, such as happiness. You can also try using music that promotes relaxation/reduces stress levels or music that will increase your energy level depending on your desired outcome. Including dancing and/or singing can also help you feel better both inside and out.

It's important to pick music you like and that helps you feel how you want to feel in the moment.

The crown chakra is positively influenced by music that features spiritually resonant lyrics, ethereal melodies, and transcendent themes. Songs that evoke feelings of spiritual connection and enlightenment are also beneficial.
