Purpose of the Throat Chakra

The throat chakra holds the energy needed for communication. This chakra starts to develop between the ages of 7 and 12 as our ability to communicate grows. If this chakra becomes unbalanced, you might have trouble speaking and feeling heard, as well as listening and taking in information.

Throat Chakra: Foundation of Life
The throat chakra represents our right to speak and to be heard.

 Connection to the Physical Body
The throat chakra is linked to the throat, thyroid, trachea, esophagus, parathyroid, hypothalamus, neck vertebrae, mouth, jaw, and teeth.

Connection to the Emotional/Mental Body
The throat chakra represents the power of choice. All illness has a connection to the throat chakra since choice is involved in every aspect of our lives.

Connection to the Spiritual Body
The energy of the throat chakra resonates with our accountability for the choices we make.

Interpreting the Energy of the Throat Chakra

When the throat chakra’s energy is out of balance, it can develop either an excessive or deficient coping strategy for survival.

Excessive Throat Chakra

Too much energy stays in the body, making it overactive, dense, and stagnant. Signs of excess imbalance include:

  • Talking too much
  • Inability to listen or poor auditory comprehension
  • Dominating conversations and interrupting others
  • Gossiping

Deficient Throat Chakra

Too much energy leaves the body, leaving it passive, empty, and feeling useless. Signs of deficient imbalance include:

  • Fear of speaking
  • Weak voice
  • Difficulty expressing feelings in words
  • Introverted and shy
  • Tone deafness

Balanced Throat Chakra

A balanced throat chakra means:

  • Resonant, clear voice
  • Good listening skills
  • Effective communication
  • Creativity in expression

Complications of the Throat Chakra

The throat chakra can face several complications affecting communication, creativity, listening, and having a clear voice.

Possible Causes of Complications

Complications can arise from experiences like being told lies or mixed messages, verbal abuse, constant yelling, excessive criticism, secrets (threats for telling), authoritarian parents, not being allowed to speak up for yourself, or living in an environment that doesn’t allow for speaking your truth, trusting, or feeling.

Physical Manifestations of Imbalance

When the throat chakra is imbalanced, it can show up in physical issues such as:

  • Disorders of the throat, ears, or neck
  • Tightness in jaw
  • Speech defects
  • Neck pain
  • Overactive or underactive thyroid
  • Toxicity in body

"In the sacred space of my throat chakra, my words become seeds of creation, and my voice echoes the melody of my soul. With clarity and authenticity, I express my truth, and with openness and receptivity, I listen to the whispers of the universe."

Healing the Throat Chakra

Therapeutic Color: Blue         Associated Element: Sound

Every trauma held in the body affects your whole system–physically, mentally, and emotionally. For example, breaking a leg not only impacts you physically but also influences your thoughts and emotions. When trauma happens it can create a gap between your mind and body and cause issues with how your system communicates with itself, keeping you from healing. When healing, it’s crucial to address trauma comprehensively and work towards reestablishing a connection between what you are thinking and what you are feeling in your body and allow it to be expressed emotionally.

The following suggestions can help to balance the energy of the throat chakra. It is important to note, that healing requires careful attention and patience, especially when dealing with long-held traumas. It may be uncomfortable as you confront past experiences, but this is a natural part of the healing process.

For the best results, combine several methods that you find enjoyable and practice them regularly. Healing takes time and persistence, so be patient with yourself throughout the journey.

1. Connect with your voice
When the throat chakra is out of balance, it can cause issues with how you express yourself. Your voice is what connects your mind and body, helping you share your feelings and understand your thoughts. When this chakra is out of balance, none of these things can happen.

To balance your throat chakra, you need to connect with your voice so you can express your feelings in healthy ways. Some great ways to do this are to make noise by singing, chanting, reading out loud, etc. Any practice that allows you to make controlled sound can help to balance the energy of the throat chakra.

2. Yoga poses
Yoga focused on loosening the neck and shoulders can help to balance the energy of the throat chakra. Some helpful poses include fish poselion’s breath, and plow pose.

3. Journal your thoughts
Healing the throat chakra means connecting with your voice so you can express your feelings in healthy and appropriate ways. Journaling is a great way to do this because it gives you a safe space to practice putting your thoughts and feelings into words. It can also help you understand how you struggle with expressing yourself.

Try to make journaling a daily habit. Set aside a little time each day to write down how you’re feeling and focus on letting the words flow freely without judgment. You can also try recording yourself for a vocal journal if that feels more comfortable.

4. Gain control of your self-talk
An imbalance in the throat chakra can mean that you struggle with negative self-talk. Saying negative things about yourself, either in your head or out loud, can hurt your health and well-being. When you keep repeating these negative thoughts, they create neural pathways in your brain, making it easier for you to think this way by default. So, if you constantly think, “I’m stupid,” “I’m a failure,” or “I’m ugly,” your brain starts to believe these things are true.

To heal your throat chakra, it’s important to take control of the messages you tell yourself and how you talk about yourself to others. Try replacing negative thoughts with positive ones that are true.

Here are some examples:

Negative Self-talk

Positive Self-talk

I’m stupid

I know a lot of things. It’s OK to not know everything.

I have never accomplished anything

I’ve accomplished a lot in my life

I’m ugly

I am a beautiful person

I’m lazy

I get a lot done

I don’t deserve to be happy

I deserve to be happy and healthy

I’m worthless

I’m a valuable person

5. Practice silence
Healing the throat chakra isn’t just about using your voice; practicing silence is just as important. Silence helps you focus on your inner feelings and connect with your inner voice. Taking a moment each day to be silent in a quiet environment can really help balance the energy of the throat chakra. This quiet time allows you to reflect and understand your emotions better, making it easier to express yourself in a healthy way.

6. Work on communication skills
Communication is the main function of the throat chakra. When this chakra is out of balance, it can cause issues with how you communicate. Specifically, if you have an excess imbalance, you likely struggle with listening, and if you have a deficient imbalance speaking could be difficult. Working on your communication skills can significantly help balance this chakra. This means working on both listening and speaking more effectively to get your throat chakra back on track.

Excess – Work on listening skills by:

  • Making eye contact
  • Don’t interrupt/fill in the blanks
  • Practice active listening
  • Listen without judgment
  • Don’t plan what you are going to say next
  • Pay attention to non-verbal communication

Deficiency – Work on speaking skills by:

  • Taking a deep breath before you speak
  • Slowing your speech to a comfortable pace
  • Focus on projecting your voice at the loudest comfortable volume
  • Work on articulating your words clearly and concisely
  • Don’t settle for interruptions, speak up if you are feeling unheard

7. Practice deep breathing
Your voice needs breath to work well, and stronger breaths make it easier to communicate. Practicing deep breathing can help build the muscles you need for clear and strong communication. You can try specific breathing exercises like belly breathing or equal breathing, or just focus on taking deeper, longer breaths throughout your day. This will help you speak more clearly and at a better volume.

Chakra Therapies

Affirmations are powerful tools for changing how you think about yourself. They help replace negative self-talk with positive statements that support healing.

  • My voice is important
  • I express myself clearly and with confidence
  • I speak my truth

Aromatherapy uses certain scents to create a focused connection with different parts of the body through the sense of smell.

Some scents that work great for the throat chakra include Camphor, Eucalyptus, Frankincense, and Peppermint.

Color therapy uses the different wavelengths of light found in color to establish a connection to specific areas of the body.

The color blue vibrates at the same range of frequency as the throat chakra. Because of this, wearing the color blue or bringing it into your surroundings can help balance the energy of the throat chakra.

Food is the most powerful medicine. It can affect different parts of the body in specific ways.

Some foods that are great for the throat chakra include foods that are blue in color (e.g., blackberries, blueberries, blue grapes), as well as tree fruits (e.g., apples, grapefruit, kiwi, peaches, pears, plums). Foods and liquids that are soothing to the throat are also great for throat chakra health (e.g., herbal teas, lemon).

Music therapy can be beneficial for a wide range of physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs. It can help with emotional processing and expression, reduce stress, alleviate anxiety and depression, promote relaxation, manage pain, and support overall well-being.

Music therapy can be used in various ways. You can try listening to specific songs work through feelings like anger or to transition to a different emotional state, such as happiness. You can also try using music that promotes relaxation/reduces stress levels or music that will increase your energy level depending on your desired outcome. Including dancing and/or singing can also help you feel better both inside and out.

It's important to pick music you like and that helps you feel how you want to feel in the moment.

The throat chakra is positively influenced by music that features melodies which encourage self-expression, authenticity, and speaking one’s truth. Songs that convey themes of self-expression, communication, and empowerment are also beneficial, as well as those that encourage the emotional expression of insecurity.

To focus on the throat chakra, try vocalizing the vowel a (as in game), or the mantra Ham. Focus on how the vibrations feel in your throat.
